Bengy Takes His Turn

Imagination Library Graduate of the Month, October 2025
Bengy turned five in October 2025. By then he had been enrolled in one BASIC program or another for more than two years, which is to say for most of his life.
He is a cheerful, gentle boy, and reliably the one smiling in the photograph. In October he was named the Imagination Library’s Graduate of the Month and given a certificate and five books. What makes his case worth writing down is not the certificate. It is that three separate programs, designed at different times for different ages, happened to line up end to end for one child.

The books
Bengy joined the Imagination Library in August 2023 and received a book a month until he turned five. His mother says he read them several times a week — not once each, several times a week — which is the difference between owning books and using them.
The reading circle
The Latino Family Literacy Project runs in sessions, and Bengy has now done three of them, most recently in the autumn of 2025 with the after-school group. The sessions are built around families reading together rather than children being read to, and Bengy took to the discussion part of it. During reading circles he volunteers what he thought of the story, usually which character was his favorite and which part he liked best.
The classroom
He was in the first season of TK Academy, the fifteen-day summer program that gets four- and five-year-olds ready for kindergarten on the elementary school campus itself. His mother’s account of what changed is specific, and it is not all academic.

The last two items on that list are the ones teachers ask for. A five-year-old who can already follow an instruction and wait his turn starts kindergarten with attention to spare for the actual learning, which is the entire argument for the program.

And the parade
He also walked with BASIC in the Borrego Days parade, waving at people along the route. It is not a literacy outcome and it will not appear on a report card, but a five-year-old who thinks of the organization that mails him books as something he belongs to is a result of a kind.

Three programs, one child, one town
Books in the mail, a family reading circle, and a classroom summer. None of them charge a family anything, and all of them are funded here.
