Early Literacy

An infant holding an illustrated board book, from BASIC's earliest-years reading program

BASIC’s early literacy program builds foundational reading skills for children during their most critical developmental years. Through carefully curated collections of bilingual English and Spanish books, we make quality literature accessible to families across our community who might otherwise lack the resources to support early reader development. Our volunteers work tirelessly to prepare and distribute picture books that capture children’s imaginations while introducing them to language, storytelling, and the joy of reading.

When children are exposed to books from their earliest years, they develop stronger vocabulary, better listening skills, and a lifelong love of learning. BASIC recognizes that early literacy is not just about teaching children to decode words—it’s about creating moments of connection between children and caring adults, whether parents, teachers, or volunteers. By placing books directly into the hands of families and supporting reading experiences in schools and community spaces, we help ensure that every child in Borrego Springs has the chance to discover the transformative power of stories.
