Literacy Blooms at the Youth and Seniors Center

The spring semester of the Latino Family Literacy Project moved into the Borrego Springs Youth and Seniors Center, and brought learning tablets with it.
The Spring 2025 semester of BASIC’s Latino Family Literacy Project (LFLP) flourished at the Borrego Springs Youth and Seniors Center, a treasured community space that unites generations through learning and connection. This collaboration offered families a welcoming environment where they could immerse themselves in literacy-focused activities, surrounded by the energy and support of the local community.
A highlight of the semester was the introduction of ApSeed learning tablets, donated by BASIC, for children under five at the Center. These innovative tools provided young learners with engaging, interactive experiences that helped them build foundational literacy skills, setting the stage for their educational growth.
Hosting the program at the Youth and Seniors Center allowed us to bring together resources, families, and a sense of community under one roof.

“Thanks to the partnerships and dedicated efforts of our supporters, we’re empowering families to integrate joyful learning into their daily lives,” Meza said.
Parents first
At the heart of the project is a transformative approach: empowering bilingual parents to play a pivotal role in their children’s early education. Through hands-on activities and group learning sessions, parents develop essential literacy skills and establish reading routines with their children before they even begin preschool. These early habits prepare children to enter school ahead of the curve, fostering both confidence and curiosity about learning.

Programs like BASIC’s equip parents to harness this critical period, ensuring their children are better prepared for academic success and lifelong learning. With its engaging atmosphere designed for both learning and play, the Center proved to be the perfect venue for fostering connections between parents and children while supporting educational growth.
