Introducing the Barbara Coates Scholarship

A new named scholarship for students on their way to becoming teachers, honoring the board member who has led BASIC’s fundraising and mentored its scholars.
Barbara Coates has been an exceptional leader and advocate within BASIC and the Borrego community. Her dedication to education, fundraising, and mentorship has positively influenced countless students and strengthened our programs. Barbara has led fundraising efforts and is involved in mentoring students, making a lasting impact on Borrego youth.
To honor her ongoing commitment, we are excited to announce the Barbara Coates Scholarship, which will support students focusing on a career in education. This scholarship reflects Barbara’s passion for empowering future generations of teachers and her belief in the transformative power of education.

Why a scholarship for future teachers
Borrego Springs runs on its teachers. Several of BASIC’s own scholars have come back to teach at the summer Learning Academy, and the McFarland Family Teacher Education Scholarships have long supported students completing their credentials. The Barbara Coates Scholarship adds a second path for the same purpose: a named award, given on top of a scholar’s regular BASIC support, for a student who has chosen the classroom as a career.
Named scholarships are funded by donors who wish to have a loved one remembered, support education in a specific field, or reward academic excellence. Every dollar given to this fund goes to a Borrego student on their way to becoming a teacher.
The honoree
Barbara served as BASIC’s President and continues on the board as Vice-President. She has chaired fundraising, read scholarship applications, and mentored the students those applications came from. Ask a BASIC scholar who wrote them a note of encouragement, and Barbara’s name comes up a lot.
